Proposition
36, an initiative voted by the people
in 2001, supporting treatment as opposed
to incarceration has celebrated the success
of its efforts by having a picnic
each year. This year Adult Drug Court
is joining our festivities. Both are court-supervised
drug treatment programs for non-violent
drug offenders.
Proposition
36 has made an impact on Sacramento County
by enhancing public safety and reducing
recidivism. Court supervised treatment
has changed the lives of people in our
community who without the Proposition
may not have been offered an opportunity
at treatment. Recent statistics find that
one out of four Proposition 36 participants
completes their treatment requirements,
findings that are amazing when compared
to an average length of addiction history
lasting up to 15 - 20 years.
Participants
in the program come to eat, play games
and socialize with there new-found clean
and sober companions. This year there
will be live music and speakers from the
entities involved. There will be an array
of alumni participants from Proposition
36 and Adult Drug Court who will also
be participating in the speaking portion
of the day.
Agencies
involved are as listed: Sacramento County
Alcohol and Drug Services, Sacramento
Probation, California Department of Corrections
and Rehabilitation, Adult Drug Court,
The Effort Inc., National Counsel on Alcoholism
and Drug Dependence, Mexican American
Alcoholism Program, Bi Valley Medical
Clinic and Community Connections.
