Charles H.
As I embrace this light
at the end of the tunnel,
and realize it’s not
the train coming, my hopes
begin to soar. I am so thankful
for my new found life, Prop
36 and the people involved
that made all the difference
in the world.
Not in my wildest dreams
did I think I’d find
myself on a plane to the
Capitol rallying for what
I believe in. Thanks to
myself for graduating, and
thanks to so many for bringing
me into their lives. A special
thanks to Oliver Hamilton
for coaxing me along. I’m
in it for the long hall,
and loving every minute
of it.
For two decades after the
Vietnam War, Charles struggled
with his addiction. Thanks
to Prop. 36, he was able
to access treatment through
the Veterans Administration
and then through VVSD, a
recovery home for veterans
in San Diego. He now lives
in San Diego with his fiancée,
just bought a new truck
and is establishing his
own new business. He is
also a poet and an active
member of the local Prop.
36 Alumni Association. He
visits the city’s
Prop. 36 court regularly
to lend support to current
Prop. 36 participants and
his poetry is often posted
there.
